Issue I

OPENING KICKOFF AUGUST 23

BROADLANDS, CASEY, MARSHALL, AND OAKLAND HOSTS

Better football weather cannot be imagined for today's season opener. Based on last year's performance, the key game should be Cumberland at Casey-Westfield; both teams fielded playoff teams in both age divisions, and the rivalry and competition is always fierce. All games are expected to be well fought and played judging from the quality of competition at the Jamboree. It will be interesting to see how the Palestine-Hutsonville Pioneers fare against the East Central Panthers; the Pioneers are making an 80 mile trip today, the longest possible trip in the league. Good luck to all, every team at this point leads the league in wins and losses! May there be no injuries today, and good sportsmanship all around.

JAMBOREE HUGE SUCCESS

Big Jamboree Crowd

This was my first Jamboree. I went into the event thinking the big story would be who won and lost each individual scrimmage. I found this is not really what the Jamboree is about. There were several acres of players, fans, coaches, Paris workers - this was a cross between a huge family outing and a sporting event. Paris had set up numerous and spacious tent awnings on the grass surrounding the field, and on the practice field, for players and supporters alike. The stands were also well populated, and a steady stream of folks walked to and from both concession stands, the vendors, and just to enjoy themselves. Tasty pork chop dinners and sandwiches were cranked out by the concessions all day. Most all of the spectators had a loose and friendly attitude, and the event seemed highly enjoyed by everyone.

Two scrimmages were running at once at any given time; one each of the younger kids and the older kids. One reason winners and losers were not particularly relevant is that each team was on offense for five minutes. Turnovers, a key to winning in most games, were almost irrelevant - they resulted in the ball given back to the offensive team, just like an incomplete pass. Also, when fourth down came around, without a first down being made, the offensive team continued to play. This format is excellent to let kids practice in a competitive atmosphere.

For the fifth and sixth grade, all teams seemed to need work - this is reasonable with many players just starting out. Seventh and eighth grade, had several scrimmages stand out in my mind - East Central gave a nice offensive performance against Palestine. Palestine and Martinsville was also a good scrimmage, with each team scoring well against the other. Many other scrimmages and teams were excellent on both levels.
