GAME SCORES BELOW

EAST CENTRAL AND PALESTINE-HUTSONVILLE SPLIT WINS

The Palestine-Hutsonville Pioneer fifth and sixth graders shut out the East Central Panthers in a hard fought, evenly matched contest. The Pioneers executed several key plays better than the Panthers, allowing the Pioneers to win.

The home field advantage helped the seventh and eighth grade Panthers get a quick lead over the Pioneers. The Panthers shut down their oppenent's opening drive, then scored a quick touchdown. The Pioneers' quarterback Blake Newlin made good things happen on their next drive, but then the Panthers recovered a turnover. On the Panthers' ensuing drive, Newlin, also a starting linebacker, injured his knee close to his goal line, which took the wind out of the Pioneer's sails. The Panthers went on to a blowout victory.

PARIS WINS BIG OVER TRI-COUNTY

These games were the result of a well coached Paris Tigers program going against the Tri-County Titans program, which did not field enough players this year to have an offensive squad distinct from the defensive squad. The fifth and sixth grade Titans field enough players for two separate squads, but only because it includes fourth graders. The Titan coaches choose to keep most of the fourth graders on the sideline until they believe the fourth graders are ready to compete safely at the fifth and sixth grade level. The Titan's seventh and eighth grade squad has only enough players for four or five on the sideline during play. This observer did not see the fifth and sixth graders, but the seventh and eighth grade Titans played very hard, were obviously well coached, and actually scored in this contest, but the Tigers also played well and hard, and were relatively rested with their large squad.

WET FIELD REQUIRES CASEY-WESTFIELD MOVE TO CUMBERLAND

by Bob Dane

Due to the large amount of rain this past few days, our school district would not allow us to play our home game this week against Cumberland. The great people of Cumberland allowed us to play our game there today. We took care of the concessions and they covered the gates and chain gangs. We extend our sincere thanks to the Cumberland administration, staff, and JFL coaches in making this game possible. I can never say enough good things about my own coaches and board in helping us move concessions to Cumberland field. My appreciation and many thanks to Todd & Denise Whaley, Ervin & Diana Schultz & daughters, my wife Julie & sons John & Zack in getting everything moved and set-up. Of course thanks to all my parents for helping in concessions, and master chefs Stacey Williams, Eric Blankenship and Michelle Cohen for cooking out. Kudos to our new concessions coordinator, Nikii Stepina. Thank you everyone for all you do.

Both games were blowouts in Casey-Westfield's favor. The Casey-Westfield program has a tremendous tradition, and tends to put a lot of resources into coaching and the program. I believe these facts give the program an advantage in the early season. However, last year's Cumberland program was in the playoffs in both age groups, competing well against Casey-Westfield and the entire league. It is too soon to count the excelllent Cumberland program out of the running for the playoffs and championship.

MARSHALL SHUTS OUT MARTINSVILLE

I did not observe this game, but Martinsville is another of the programs in which the number of players does not allow distinct offensive and defensive teams. One can imagine the large numbers of Marshall players coming in and out of the game, always well rested, going against the Martinsville players, pretty much forced to play the entire game, both offense and defense. This results in a distinctly uneven contest.
