CASEY-WESTFIELD LEAGUE CHAMPIONS DEFEAT EAST CENTRAL
The East Central Panthers came to Casey on Sunday to attempt to dethrone the defending Champion Casey-Westfield Braves. Both Braves teams won the league championships in 2008 with perfect 7-0 records. Both Casey-Westfield teams looked forward to the challenge of a second straight lossless season.
Casey-Westfield's fifth and sixth grade passing game was near flawless as quarterback Elkins spread the passes for over 120 yards of air time. The ground game was not to be outdone and scored three times with two point conversions. The passing touchdown was caught by Waylon Strange and the conversion was good for a final score of 30-0.
This was Elkins best game overall this year. He has done a tremendous job of leading the offensive unit and we were blessed to have two exceptionally strong back-up quarterbacks in Joe Adams and Christian Cochnour. Our running game has been led by Ethan Lucas, Brett Currey, Andrew Brink and Nathan Sewell. We have been three deep at the backfield positions and have not missed a beat with our back-ups. With todays win, the fifth and sixth Grade Braves are the 2009 Wabash Valley Youth Football League Champions, with a 7-0 record.
The seventh and eighth grade game was much more physical, and the referee crew had their hands full all day. Casey-Westfield started the scoring with a touchdown and tacked on the extra point for an early 8-0 lead. The Braves' kicking game and defense kept the Panthers on their end of the field throughout the first half. Casey-Westfield tacked on another touchdown before halftime for a 16-0 lead. East Central started the second half with an onside kick that they recovered. Again the "D" rose to the occasion and stopped the Panthers in the Red Zone. Casey-Westfield took over the ball and marched down the field for their third score and point after.
Quarterback Stepina was on fire today with a great mixture of passes and ground game. The ground game was led by Zach Murphy, Austin Glidewell, Coltin Sewell, and Jordan Brandenburg, who were helped by a quick and tough offensive line. The defense was a team effort. The final touchdown was scored by Baylor Myers on a reception with the two point conversion added and a final score of 32-0. Tempers flared during the second half which is common during hard fought ball games. The East Central coaching staff has brought their young men a long way in a short time. This victory allowed Casey-Westfield to finish as the seventh and eighth grade regular season Wabash Valley Youth Football League Champions for 2009 with a 7-0 record.
PARIS AND CUMBERLAND SPLIT MATCHUP
The Paris Tiger fifth and sixth grade easily handled the Cumberland Junior Pirates Sunday afternoon. Paris' Brendan Bradfield scored both touchdowns for Paris racking up another 100+ yard game. The Paris line did a fine job blocking - we would like to recognize Joey Stidham, Steve Johnson, Zach Cox, Levi Shaffer and Jake Hannig for their fine efforts.
The Tigers were able to shut down the Cumberland offense, allowing only a couple of first downs. The defense was lead by Kyle Borchers, Mackie Mullenix, Brady Sutton, Connor Polk, Austin Shonk, and Brendan Bradfield.
The seventh and eighth grade Junior Pirates returned the favor to the Tigers, handily defeating the Paris home squad. Both victors will be playing next week in post season competition.
