The Marshall Lions defeated the Cumberland Junior Pirates 28-14 in a well contested and hard fought game. Both teams were well coached and well prepared. The team atmosphere for Cumberland was loose and relaxed, with the Lions taking a more intense approach.
The contest was tied at 14 by the end of the half. Cumberland coach Lucas Watkins explained, "We played harder and better in the first half, but we missed some tackles." Marshall coach Pat Duncan said at half-time, "We ran the ball well in the first half. We must play better on defense to win."
The Lions were successful at shutting the Pirates down defensively in the second half, holding Cumberland scoreless. The Lions' offensive line and fullback blasted holes into Cumberland's defense, allowing Jacob Duncan to push the ball forward, and Jordan Grooms to slash into the defense with speed and tackle breaking skill.
